Monsters often use deception to lure unsuspecting people who wander too far into a false sense of security before closing the trap. Sometimes fae sing sweet melodies or dance, inviting anyone lost in the woods to join in, though once a human starts dancing, they will never be able to stop. Worse, a creature may invite a human to dinner, only for the human to discover that the invitation was for them to become dinner.

In one such clever ploy, a cirein-cròin disguises itself as a tiny silver fish and allows fishermen to capture it in a net. Once brought on board the boat, the cirein-cròin transforms into an enormous sea monster who eats the entire crew and sinks their ship.

Things in nature are best left alone. Take care that you don’t tread living creatures beneath your feet, nor take wild things from their homes. Wild things are not meant to be tamed. And unlucky is the person who tries to take sneaky beasts like a cirein-cròin home for a pet.
